Operation
Activity zoning and management
This operation designed to develop zoning methods for the islands in French Polynesia so as to:
- inform future investors of promising sites for developing aquacultural activities and marine ranching
- propose zoning one to three target lagoons already under study
2 actions
The goal of this action is to integrate the latest R&D information and conduct an up-to-date literature review in order to propose an incremental zone method to be included in the next set of regulations, which should include zoning categories for aquaculture, and one or more work and feedback meetings. Work is underway on simulating (effects of currents, bathymetry, biomass) macro-waste deposits (manure, food water) from Paraha peue cages (DEPOMOD software, DRM-Ifremer “QualiSant” (Health Quality) Agreement). Simulation using floating shrimp cages is planned as part of a three-year DRM-Ifremer “DEPOMOD2” project. At the same time, a study designed to propose model “ICPE 2eme classe” (facilities listed for the protection of the environment) decrees was underway in 2019 (ISTOM (French Overseas Science and Techniques Institute) student engineer internships at DRM) and should include proposed thresholds (before the “Guide for monitoring the quality of marine environments subject to aquacultural activities in French Polynesia” planned as part of PROTEGE action 5A.2.2)
The goal of the operation is to define zoning for the islands of French Polynesia so as to:
- inform future investors of promising sites for developing aquacultural activities and marine ranching
- propose zoning one to three target lagoons already under study procedures to test activities that may impact their surroundings (including aquaculture), and recommendations in terms of zoning.
At the same time, DRM will continue to draft a French Polynesia law and other regulations on aquaculture including the zoning method and zone categories for aquaculture.
At the very least, this action will focus on priority aquacultural development zones, i.e. TAIARAPU lagoon (TAHITI peninsula) and RAIATEA-TAHAA lagoon. Initially it will involve integrating the outcomes of INTEGRE and, if possible, action 6C.2.1 so as to update the maps made during INTEGRE, and validate the zones for the different categories.
The second part of the action will consist of holding discussion workshops with institutional and professional stakeholders (departments, scientists, consultancies, aquaculturalists, etc.) and local stakeholders (municipalities, aquaculturalists, fishers, associations, etc.) to correct the proposed zones and validate zoning before issuing regulations.
