Assessing fishing pressure on reef and lagoon resources
This operation has the ambitious goal of assessing fishing pressure on reef and lagoon resources in the three OCTs This assessment will provide indicators to estimate annual harvests (fish, crustaceans, shellfish, etc.) and per-capita consumption of animal protein from the reef. It will also make it possible to assess reef and lagoon fisheries’ contribution in relation to other sectors such as oceanic fisheries, aquaculture, and, by comparison monitoring changes in fishing pressure over time. Illegal fishing in outlying reefs will also be estimated using innovative tools. The ultimate goal is to improve marine resource management and help guide public policy.
3 actions
- Develop terms of reference to allow future implementation of this action. Based on existing information (consumer surveys, studies already carried out in each OCT), these terms of reference will clearly outline the protocols to be implemented, based on a variety of precision and cost scenarios. It will have enough details (provide survey questionnaires, number of households or fishers to meet, etc./island) so that actions can be then be implemented
- Action will then possible via a call for proposals based on the terms of reference. Depending on the outcomes of the first phase and the budget allocated to this action, a fairly wide-scale survey will then begin
