PROTEGE

PROTEGE (“Pacific Territories Regional Project for Sustainable Ecosystem Management” or “protect” in French) is an initiative designed to promote sustainable and climate-change-resilient economic development in the European Pacific overseas countries and territories (OCT) by emphasising biodiversity and renewable resources. PROTEGE is a regional cooperation project that supports the public policies of the four Pacific OCTs, i.e. New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis & Futuna and Pitcairn.

Designed to last four-years (2018-2022), it covers four themes, i.e.
• Agriculture et Forestry,
• Coastal Fisheries and Aquaculture,
• Water,
• Invasive Species.

PROTEGE will receive EUR 36 million from the European Development Fund’s (EDF) regional budget along with cofunding of some EUR 128,000 from the three French territories.

  • An integrated forestry, agroforestry and coconut-grove management policy is developed and implemented
  • Cooperation between the OCTs and between the OCTs and the ACP countries is strengthened and made sustainable through operational, coordination and support mechanisms
  • Viable agroecological systems are validated technically and then shared, and barriers to organic agriculture are removed

Coastal fisheries and aquaculture
  • Aquaculture techniques that are sustainably integrated into natural settings and suited to island economies are trialled and implemented at pilot scales and then transferred to the rest of the Pacific
  • Participatory management and integrated planning of exploited fisheries resources are continued and strengthened
  • Fisheries and aquaculture products are developed as part of a sustainable development approach
  • Cooperation between the OCTs and between the OCTs and the ACP countries is strengthened and made sustainable through operational, coordination and support mechanisms

Water
  • Water and aquatic environments are protected, managed and restored
  • Resilience to water-related natural and man-made risks is strengthened
  • Cooperation between the OCTs and between the OCTs and the ACP countries is strengthened and made sustainable through operational, coordination and support mechanisms

Invasive species
  • Biosecurity is enhanced through the development of strategies and action plans to better prevent the introduction of invasive species
  • Mechanisms to monitor and manage certain exotic invasive animal and plant species are implemented to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services.
  • Cooperation between the OCTs and between the OCTs and the ACP countries is strengthened and made sustainable through operational, coordination and support mechanisms
