Developing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture master plans
The goal of this operation is to set up coastal fisheries and aquaculture master plans in order to have consistent and concerted development strategies for those sectors in New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna. This operation will make it possible to offer a longterm vision, set a strategy to reach sustainable development goals in line with the context of each OCT.
2 actions
This is an inclusive action, that will build on the information received through other actions (5A3 ; 5B1, 6A2, 7A) to offer decision-makers strategic projections for harmonious development of these sectors. For example recommendations could be made on possible species/rearing models, underlying economic models as well as the type of development they could bring about (work from 8A; 8B; 5B); proposals on good practices and environmental monitoring (work from 5A); promising sites or priority zones for developing aquaculture (5A; 5B); preventative actions and projections about the possible effects of climate change on those activities; recommendations on the product value levels and how to structure the sector, etc.
- Undertake a process of consultations with traditional leaders, elected officials and technical departments in charge of managing and protecting marine resources and economic development
- Feasibility study for developing aquaculture on Wallis in terms of the technical, environmental and social and economic risks
- Include community marine-resource management in public policies
- Develop a territorial strategy to acquire knowledge about the marine environment
