Operation
Setting up and inter-island/small island environmental monitoring system
This operation aims to set up inter-island biosecurity measures to prevent rats from being reintroduced to eradication sites on Wallis and black rats from being introduced to Alofi from Futuna. The operation also seeks to determine whether Alofi is free of black rats.
3 actions
By communicating with persons sailing between Wallis and its offshore islands, the risk of re-introducing the rats after the eradication operation can be mitigated. Laying bait stations and distributing traps will also help reduce the rat population in areas used by vessels.
Laying traps and bait stations around wharves on Alofi will also reveal whether black rats have been introduced there.
By laying traps and bait stations in Futuna’s more densely populated areas, the risk of introducing rats from there to Alofi will be mitigated.
