Operation
Reintroducing trees into farming systems
The goal of this operation is to develop relevant agroforestry and agropastoral systems that comply with organic agriculture requirements and to disseminate their implementation techniques.
2 actions
The goal of this action is to set up crop & livestock farming-tree associations/combinations that comply with organic requirements so as to demonstrate the effects of using trees to:
• improve soil fertility (tap root system, N, organic matter, etc.)
• protect soil: windbreaks and heat protection for the soil, reducing erosion/run-off, mulching/RCW, etc.
• Crop biodiversity and protection: nectar plants, hedges/flower strips , limiting grass growth, etc.
• Livestock farming: grazing under coconut trees, fodder (legumes), etc.
• Fruit tree farming and intercropping, etc.
This action is designed to produce and publish technical factsheets and an agroforestry benchmark by compiling existing technical and economic data along with the results from trials on:
• non-invasive plants that can be used for agroforestry and are suitable to local conditions
• ways to plant trees within plots (large-scale crops, market and fruit crops)
• economic results of agroforestry and agropastoralism
