Operation
Watershed or water body management strategy
This operation aims at providing support to territories in defining strategies for managing and restoring watershed and water body health and carrying out public awareness exercises on the importance of healthy watersheds and ecosystems located above water lenses.
3 actions
This action item aims at defining strategic resources in New Caledonia based on the following methodology:
- mapping and classifying water resources
- setting up a database of facilities, structures and uses; and
- identifying the main strategic resources based on a multi-criteria approach
The New Caledonian local government authorities have devised a number of action points for designing watershed restoration strategies. These involve collecting data from or carrying out action studies on specific sites. A discussion phase will be held in Year 1 to define which action items to carry out based on the available budget.
The study findings will have a regional aspect in that they will be at least partially transferable to other Pacific high continental and volcanic islands.
Awareness activities will be conducted in three territories:
- awareness advertising aired in French Polynesia
- designing and disseminating awareness material on Wallis & Futuna
- designing and disseminating awareness material in New Caledonia
