Operation
Establishing best aquaculture practices
This operation, carried out in French Polynesia and New Caledonia targets aquaculture development based on best practice and aimed towards achieving environmental excellence. Based on an initial assessment of existing or future sectors’ positive and negative interactions with the environment, improving practices will be based on international, regional or local environmental certification approaches. New Caledonia and French Polynesia will be able to move toward environmental certification of their production, where appropriate.
2 actions
- Literature review of the known positive and negative impacts of aquacultural activities in tropical marine settings (linked to action 5A.2: Guide for monitoring the quality of marine environments subject to aquacultural activities)
- Describing and characterising the estimated or observed environmental impacts of aquacultural activities in French Polynesia and in New Caledonia, including analysis of inputs’ (chemical substances used) life cycle
- Benchmarking international, regional or local environmental certification processes and proper aquaculture practices and recommendations for OCTs
- Drawing up operational recommendations designed to decrease impact over the long-, medium- and short-terms
- Proposing a list of actions to be implemented as part of PROTEGE, taking into account their environmental effectiveness, how easy they are to implement and their costs
- Operational action to be decided later based on the outcomes of 5A.3.1. e.g. encouragement to use local feed; use the by-products of livestock feed production to reduce the environmental impact of aquacultural activities; production certification or even use modelling to more closely monitor the impact of aquacultural activities in the field and to estimate an identified site’s carrying capacities
