Operation
Reviewing the status of aquacultural waste (not including pearl oyster farming) and plastic waste recycling in regards to aquacultural activities
Based on studies provided by the RESCCUE project, this operation continues the goal of creating an aquacultural waste recycling sector in French Polynesia.
The nature and volumes of aquacultural waste (pearl farming not included) will first be estimated by production unit and sector. Technical and economic studies should make it possible to lead to an operational recycling sector that will be included in an aquacultural waste management plan.
3 actions
Estimate volumes and nature of waste from aquacultural sectors (not including pearl oyster farming) (FP)
- Identify the different types of waste aquacultural businesses (fish and shrimp farming) and determine categories based on their make-up (PE/PP plastics, polluting materials (batteries, oil), organics, etc.)
- Survey aquaculturalists to assess the annual qualities of waste for each of the identified categories
- Assess annual waste production for each type of aquacultural structure (fish farms and shrimp farms)

Continue to reuse plastic waste so as to effectively organise a recycling sector (FP)
- Identify with plastic processors the techniques needed to assess the technical difficulties and validate recycling processes (volume and nature of waste tested, number of tests, etc.)
- Conduct testing
- Evaluate the economic viability of the recycling process
- Organise an operational recycling sector

Help implement an aquacultural waste management plan (FP)
- The DRM has already carried out operations to collect underwater waste from pearl oyster farming. However, the costs of services from companies specialising in underwater operations are too high. The participation of aquaculture farmers is vital to lower costs. This action involves identifying ways to integrate farmers in the collection of their underwater waste.
- Given the costs for collecting and treating waste, greater awareness of the issues is vital to reduce the waste produced when equipment is abandoned. What is involved here is helping the territory with communication and awareness-raising projects for companies and their employees: producing videos, brochures and carrying out local awareness activities.
