Operation
Developing and diversifying bee-hive products
The goal of this operation is to characterise honey produced in the OCTs (identify botanical and/or geographic origin and detect alteration). This operation has significant potential in terms of developing the bee-keeping sector in view to an added-value approach to honey origin (for export and the local market) and promoting its quality with consumers who want to benefit from high-grade products that have strong ties to unique island territories.Via its health data collection, this operation will also advance certification of honey for export markets. Finally, while honey is currently bee-keepers’ main product, the operation is designed to allow them to diversify their income by proposing other beehive products such as pollen, Propolis, beeswax, candles, etc
2 actions
The goal of this action is to characterise honey in the OCTs. Four types of testing are need to characterise honey:
• Pollen analysis
• Physical and chemical analysis
• Organoleptic (or sensory) analysis
• Analysis of the honey’s biological activity
In addition, work will be carried out on the health status of honey from Wallis & Futuna and the Loyalty Islands, so as to support any future export approaches.
The goal of this action is to hold training sessions to help bee-keepers diversify the products from their hives. It will also facilitate experience sharing between OCT bee-keepers.
