Operation
Developing and implementing drinking water safety plans (WSP)
This operation aims to:
- develop planning documents for the necessary upgrades to the drinking-water supply to ensure quality water is supplied and plan ahead for any crises by defining remedial measures; and
- foster implementation of the planned upgrades by raising funds for PROTEGE to act as a catalyst.

There are plans to carry out surveys in some five French Polynesian municipalities. Budget permitting, the initiative could be extended to other municipal areas.
On Wallis & Futuna, the plan is to carry out two WSPs, but treating the two islands separately, so as to reflect their differences in terms of supply systems, stakeholders and management strategies.
- Surveys have recently been conducted on Futuna to schedule structural upgrades to the system in the coming years. The WSP will be developed once the surveys are well underway or, ideally, finalised.
- Although Wallis Island’s supply systems are functional, they are obsolescent and, because there is no recent drinking water master plan, any upgrades could be quite onerous, if undertaken under the WSP. Both the water-supply and WSP surveys will, therefore, be conducted in tandem.
Due to Health Department (DASS) support, all New Caledonian municipal areas have now had a WSP for the last 10 years, but the action plans require implementation support. The action item includes encouraging municipalities to set up water disinfection units, particularly for drinking water.
