Valuation of fishery products: Rangiroa mission

In partnership with PROTEGE, the Directorate of Marine Resources (DRM) visited Rangiroa in early February to present two studies on the value chain of fishery products and co-products.

The meeting was opened by Mayor Teina Maraeura. The DRM then presented a technical and economic feasibility study of fish waste recovery in Rangiroa, followed by the Analysis-diagnosis of the lagoon fish agro-processing sector.

The objective of the technical and economic feasibility study for the valorisation of fish waste in Rangiroa is to identify the conditions of profitability of a project, whose raw material would be obtained from the numerous fish processing companies, and whose products would be elaborated to cover the maximum needs of the farmers of the island. Given the context of the island, the equipment available and the very large volumes of co-products to be treated, the recommendation is to acquire an eco-digester.

The second presentation reviewed the results of the diagnostic analysis of the lagoon fish agro-processing sector in French Polynesia. This study focused on the realities and expectations of professionals in Rangiroa, Arutua and Tahiti. The strengths and weaknesses of the sector were presented and recommendations for specific action to Rangiora context were discussed.

Rich exchanges followed up the presentations on the shared use of a grinder, the establishment of fishing cooperatives, the role of intermediaries in the value chain, etc.

Both studies are available on request from the DRM.
