Providing our animals with a fly larvae based diet

Providing our animals with a fly larvae based diet

100% of New Caledonian animal feed used for livestock is imported from the other side of the world with a significant carbon footprint and an economically vulnerable sector. It has become necessary to find new sources of protein for animal feed.

By 2021, Neofly company, working in collaboration with CIRAD and IAC ,seeks to develop a 100% local alternative based on Black soldier fly (BSF) breeding larvae to replace imported proteins. Intermediate results are very encouraging, this alternative allows to:

  • Reduce carbon footprint ;
  • Participate in the development of organic agriculture;
  • Recycle agro-industrial and agricultural waste
  • Create a new circular economy loop in short circuits
  • Reduce the pressure on resources and natural spaces

This collaboration will focus on five steps:

  • Conduct a benchmark on interests and potential incorporation rates of BSF-based products for poultry and piglets;
  • Upon benchmark completion, estimate pilot quantities for the various products deemed relevant to the local areas;
  • Carry out analyses of these products to identify their general and specific composition regarding the requirements of the local sectors;
  • Conduct tests on various products with a selection of breeders;
  • Focus on BSF-based materials integration into the POS (Pacific Organic Standard), and adaptation to the Caledonian context.
