The « Water » Educational Resource Kit presented to children in Wallis and Futuna
The new « Water » Educational Resource Kit from Wallis and Futuna has been presented by the Territorial Department of Environment (TDE) to more than 200 pupils and general public on the occasion of the Green European Week.
The Green European Week took place from May 28 to June 4, 2022, in Wallis and Futuna. The event aims at creating awareness among the Year 2 to Year 6 classes to the water management issues through different educational and playful workshops.
Indeed, consciousness on water as a vital and precious island good, has to be raised at the youngest age.
To do so, the TDE team, used the Educational Resource Kit developed in the PROTEGE project’s framework in Wallis, and Futuna as well. It enabled, among other things, to address the following topics:
- The water cycle in high and low islands
- The health hazard linked to a contaminated water
- Erosion and the importance of forest to have water both in quantity and quality
The toolkit was comprised as well of a set of magnets to position on a big display board explaining the water cycle, the way of water and its threats, and experiences showing pollution (waste, pig’s droppings) or the phenomenon of erosion.
The event’s partners were the French Office of Biodiversity and PROTEGE project, which is supported financially by the European Union.
