Raising awareness of young caledonian about the preservation of forests

During the Environmental Week organized by the Mont-Dore Municipality in New Caledonia, WWF and its partner organization Red Ground, together with the European Union and the Pacific Community, welcomed CM2 classes for two half-days dedicated to raising awareness about the roles of forests in the Coulée Valley, an area of intervention for WWF under the PROTEGE program.

A big congratulations to the young students who participated in the Environmental Week organized by the Mont-Dore Municipality! They were made aware of the importance of preserving the Coulée, a strategic valley for the protection of ecosystems and local communities.

The objective was for the students to leave with a wealth of knowledge about the importance of preserving the environment in this strategic valley for nature and communities. To achieve this, the presenters were able to rely on the educational model created by "La Hutte en Chantier" as part of the PROTEGE program. The aim was to develop actions with young people on the theme of the role of forests in water, using an engaging and visually supportive pedagogical tool to help understand the concepts of runoff and infiltration.

Micro-endemic plant species, residual forests, buffer zone of the integral reserve, drinking water catchments, recreational areas... the valley presents multiple challenges, and its protection is everyone's concern, including the youngest.

The educational model was funded by the European Union and the French Biodiversity Office (OFB). It is also part of the shared water policy of the Government of New Caledonia.

This action was carried out in collaboration with the French Biodiversity Office (OFB), the Government of New Caledonia, WWF New Caledonia, and the socio-environmental association Red Ground.
