Priority works at Tala'amoa site under Wallis drinking water safety plan

Measures are underway to prevent water contamination.

In Wallis and Futuna, two WSPs (Water Safety Plans) were developed with the support of the PROTEGE project to cover the entire Territory. The first is for the island of Wallis, and the second for the islands of Futuna and Alofi, comprising the Horn Islands archipelago. PROTEGE has also initiated the implementation of priority actions identified by these plans, including the compliance of 17 autonomous sanitation systems located in close proximity to the wells used for drinking water supply.

The Wallis WSP is currently underway, with ongoing efforts to raise drilling heads by 2 meters at the Tala'amoa pumping site in the south. These works, identified as priorities within the plan, aim to prevent water contamination by pathogens, detergents, or nitrates. The Public Works Department and Engie-VaiWF have collaborated to implement these crucial measures on the drilling site in the Southern district, considered the most vulnerable among all Wallis wells. The Wallis WSP, adopted in July 2022, will be assessed during an annual review scheduled for the week of 27/11, involving technical stakeholders such as TP, STE, and Engie-VaiWF.

Subsequently, this review will be presented to the Territory authorities during the Equipment, Plan, and Environment Commission (CEPE) on 12/11.
