Lifou benefits from the first new generation connected meters on farms.

These connected meters allow beneficiaries to have a continuous monitoring of consumption in sectors where management must be reasoned and shared.

As part of the water component of the PROTEGE project, which aims at assisting the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) into moving towards a more integrated water management that is better adapted to climate change, the objective of the "water management for agricultural use" action is to better match the volumes withdrawn for agriculture and the state of the resource, while maintaining the environmental flows necessary for the life of species in the environment.

This action will benefit the three provinces of New Caledonia and more particularly the farms through the supply and installation of new generation connected meters on farms located in irrigated areas.

The meters will allow continuous monitoring of consumption in these sensitive sectors where management must be reasoned and shared. Company CLEMTEC / 3Telecom has already been able to carry out the first installations in the Islands Province (Lifou). The sites of Boulouparis and Païta are being equipped and those of the Northern Province (Pouembout, Voh and Ouégoua) as well as the second part of the Islands Province (Maré) will be completed in August 2021.

These first equipments will soon be completed by the installation of weather stations, humidity probes and irrigation control tools. All these items will be connected and through a web platform will allow a more rational use of water at the plot level.
