An educational kit on the theme of water in Wallis and Futuna

The Territorial Department of the Environment (STE) and the PROTEGE SPC team developed an educational kit aimed at raising the awareness of the territory's schoolchildren about the functioning of water in the lower and upper islands.

The Pacific region is made of multiples islands – upper and higher – and in order to manage water accordingly it is essential to understand how they function.

Awareness of water as a precious and life-sustaining resource must be raised from an early age.

For a number of year, the Territorial Department of the Environment (STE) of Wallis et Futuna has led awareness raising campaigns in schools. As part of the PROTEGE project, the STE has requested an educative tool to assist them in their actions. Two educational kits have been created : one for Wallis, a typical ‘lower’ island and one for Futuna, a typical ‘upper’ island. Two islands with their own functioning systems that can be duplicated to other territories in the Pacific.

The kit includes :

- highlight sheets on water consumption, health and disease, soil erosion and pollution…,

- experiments on soil erosion, the issue of overconsumption of the freshwater natural wells paired with the saltwater intrusion risk…,

- magnetic sheets that schoolchildren will need to replace in order to identify the water track and cycle as well as threats to the resource.

A total of 6 editions of those two kits were made. The inauguration that was supposed to take place on the 22 March 2021 has been postpone

Highlight sheets, magnets et experiments.
