New item for PROTEGE’s agroecology demonstration farms of New Caledonia

The demonstration farms are being equipped with connected material in order to improve water management and optimize irrigation.

As part of New Caledonia's Shared Water Policy and in response to the challenges of PROTEGE's Agriculture-Forestry and Water component, the collaboration between CAP-NC, REPAIR, the provinces, and the Pacific Community will soon enable 12 demonstration farms to benefit from a connected equipment for water measurement and management.

The selected equipment  is from the French brand SOLEM, an expert in connected irrigation, and will be supplied by Nouméa arrosage. It has already been tested and approved by other farmers in the region. Weather stations, tensiometric probes to measure soil moisture and connected equipment for irrigation control have been ordered. The data will be accessible online on a platform that will allow the farmer to control his irrigation.

Through the exchange of knowledge between farmers and experimental innovative methods and practices, this dynamic network of demonstration farms aims at promoting the production of references to support all farmers in the agroecological transition. In addition, this acquisition of equipment will contribute to the evaluation of agricultural practices for water resource management.
