Resilience episode 12 - Honey: elixir of the Pacific

New episode of the TV magazine "Resilience" broadcasted this Sunday, December 11th, at 6pm on Caledonia TV, in New Caledonia.

In this new episode of Resilience, we are interested in the honey of the Pacific Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT). A rapidly expanding sector that must face the hazards of climate change.

Thus, within the framework of the PROTEGE project financed by the European Union and implemented by the Pacific Community, various actions are conducted to support beekeepers.

In French Polynesia, for the first time, a palynotheque of pollens present on the different archipelagos has been created. We will meet Louise, a beekeeper in Tahiti, who has agreed to let researchers come and collect pollen from her garden of Eden.

In Wallis and Futuna, Adam Vaamei will take us on a tour of his apiary and share his passion for this product, which is both good for biodiversity and good for health. Adam and his father, like many beekeepers in Fenua, wish to export their honey to New Caledonia. But for that, they need to obtain sanitary approvals. We will follow the regional cooperation between the Overseas Countries and Territories through the visit of a Caledonian veterinarian in Wallis, with the aim of setting up an epidemiological surveillance network.

New Caledonia produces nearly 160 tons of honey per year. For the moment, it is free of the main beekeeping pests. But to better fight against diseases, the Center for the Promotion of Beekeeping practices the genetic selection of queens. Romain Gueyte will show us how he carries out inseminations to perpetuate resistant and productive bee colonies.

CPS would like to sincerely thank the beekeepers, the Beekeeping Promotion Center - ADECAL Technopole of New Caledonia, the DAG, CAP NC and the OCT governments for their support and participation in this program.
