The sixth program of Resilience this Sunday on our channels

The episode "Au nom de la terre" which means “In the name of the earth” will be available this Sunday, April 3rd at 6pm on Caledonia TV. This episode will focus on agricultural practices and actions taken within Oceanian communities to make them more resilient to face global warming impacting the Pacific Islands.

Tehei, member of the PROTEGE network of agroecology demonstration farms in Fakarava, French Polynesia, cultivates a vegetable plot. As on most coral islands, water resources are scarce, and soils are poor in nutrients. PROTEGE supports Tehei to optimize the fertility of his land and his water consumption. He adapts his practices to produce fruits and vegetables without impacting the ecosystem.

In Wallis, Sosefo and Malia Falakika, a farming couple, also members of the network of farms, operate a food crop plot. Yams, taros, papayas, pandanus... the couple cultivates the traditional species of the island used for meals but also for custom and crafts.

Nevertheless, in Wallis and Futuna, agriculture no longer attracts the younger generation. The island is thus at risk of seeing ancestral agricultural practices and endemic varieties disappear. It is a real danger for agrobiodiversity, food security and climate change adaptation. The Caledonian Agro-economic Institute (IAC) will present its current actions to help in this context.

In New Caledonia, Yohanna, from CAP NC, explains how to support farmers to adapt to the vagaries of the weather.
