Rehabilitation of high biodiversity value sites in Wallis

Control of areas threatened by the devil's vine on the islet Nukufotu.

Nukufotu, nicknamed bird island, is one of the key areas for Wallis’ biodiversity. This site is dangerously threatened by the devil's vine (Epipremnum pinnatum cv 'Aureum') which has invaded the southern part of the islet on more than 3000m² on the ground and trees.

The Territorial Environment Service has been working since early 2021 on this site and has been able to remove 65% of the vine from the ground. Work continues with the uprooting of the remaining vines and the control of the cleaned areas.

Nests of electric ants have also been observed on the vine and on trees housing bird nests. An inventory is underway to determine the distribution and abundance of the electric ant on the site.
