Awareness actions about invasive species succeed one another

Various awareness-raising and training activities on invasive species were presented to schoolchildren, municipal officers, and residents of different municipalities around the Taputapuātea cultural landscape of the island of Raiatea in French Polynesia.

Illustrated guidebooks, translated into French and Tahitian, were distributed to the local population to better identify Invasive Alien Species (IAS) and to help recognize heritage plants. They are very appreciated.

In addition, a “door-to-door” awareness mission has been conducted since the end of April in OPOA, FARETAI, VAIMAARII et FAAREPA communes. During this campaign, around a thousand guidebooks were distributed.

Municipal agents have been trained in IAS management: main principles were discussed, especially their dissemination during the movement of machinery between sites. Their cleaning is essential to avoid IAS transportation. Also, implementing clearing operations, incorporating quick planting programs and the valorization of heritage plants were discussed as mandatory.
