Regional youth literature competition

The Pacific Community (SPC) is launching a competition that enables Pacific residents to address issues affecting children's health, particularly focusing on non-communicable diseases and their risk factors (physical activity, healthy diet, tobacco, alcohol, etc.).

The team from the Non-communicable diseases program of the Public Health Division of the Pacific Community (SPC) recently launched a regional youth literature competition. Its objective is to contribute to the creation of children's storybooks that can be used to promote healthy lifestyle habits and prevent non-communicable diseases among children aged 3 to 10 in the Pacific.

Non-communicable diseases (such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, etc.) are the leading cause of death in the Pacific islands. They are closely linked to unhealthy dietary habits, lack of physical activity, as well as tobacco and alcohol consumption.

Without intervention, 40% to 70% of obese children will remain obese into adulthood. Childhood obesity represents one of the greatest public health challenges in the Pacific Islands.

Teaching behaviors and good habits for a healthier lifestyle from a young age (e.g., balanced eating, regular physical activity, avoiding drinking and smoking) is a critical endeavor for the future of the region.

In addition to providing an opportunity for Pacific residents to address issues affecting children's health, particularly related to non-communicable diseases and their risk factors (physical activity, healthy diet, tobacco, alcohol, etc.), this competition aims to support creative and artistic ideas across the region.

This opportunity is open to anyone residing in one of the member States or Territories of the SPC. Participants have the option to submit one or more works with a written script alone or accompanied by illustrations.

Registrations are open until August 30, 2023. For more information:
