Valorize the waste of the coprahculture and preserve our lagoons. This is the objective of the Cocorig project: ropes made of coconut flock.

Discover the television report on the Cocorig project, initiated in French Polynesia, with the Directorate of Marine Resources.

Extract of the report:

In pearl farming, most of the ropes are made of plastic. Plastic that degrades in the ocean, pollutes the environment... but not only. This pollution also leads to an alteration in the quality of the pearls. "The plastic turns into micro-plastic. It becomes dust and it's everywhere. It kills everything", explains Benoit Parnaudeau, project leader.

To remedy this, a local company in French Polynesia, Polyacht, has started manufacturing natural ropes, made of coconut fiber. "The president said he wanted to diversify the income of the copra farmers. (...) We said to ourselves, there is the coconut plantation around the lagoon, we can perhaps make ropes with the coconut fiber to put them in the pearl farms. It's a circular economy, it's perfect. That's the genesis of the project."

The Cocorig project was a finalist in the Tech4islands competition in 2020. And last year in October, the carriers were present at the Tech4islands summit, an innovation event in Polynesia and the Pacific.

This project is supported by the European Union within the framework of the PROTEGE project, with the investment of the PF Marine Resources Directorate and the Pacific Community.
