A toolbox for community-based marine monitoring in Wallis and Futuna

The toolbox for community monitoring of the marine environment is a project developed by the C2O consultancy within the framework of the Pacific Fund, with the support of the PROTEGE program and in collaboration with fishermen, customary people, associations and the Wallis and Futuna administration (DSA, STE).

This toolbox enables local communities to monitor the state of the marine environment and implement appropriate actions for its preservation.

The training course, held from February 20 to 23, 2023 at the Fale Pule'aga in Hihifo, Wallis, enabled fifteen people, representing fishermen, traditional customs, associations and the administration, to familiarize themselves with the five modules of the toolbox. These modules cover catch, invertebrate, seagrass, reef and mangrove monitoring. Each module has been designed to be easily implemented by the community, be it villages, associations or schools.

The ultimate aim of this toolbox is to enable the communities of Wallis and Futuna to take charge of monitoring their marine environment and implement appropriate management actions.

This community-based marine monitoring initiative will be a valuable tool for the management of Wallis and Futuna's marine resources.
