Science festival 2022 in Wallis and Futuna

Global warming was the theme of this 2022 edition of the science festival, last November 24 and 25, at the college of Lano in Wallis. Several workshops dedicated to this topic welcomed schoolchildren, college students and high school students.

The fisheries service and the territorial environment service (STE) participated in this new edition of the science festival through several actions.

The adaptation to climate change is indeed part of the global objective of the PROTEGE project.

As far as water is concerned, the STE has raised awareness amongdozens of children through the use of the "Water" educational kit produced with the STE and the Pacific Community. Pollution, soil erosion, health, the water cycle, etc. are all issues addressed through the use of magnets and various communication tools.

As far as the I project fisheries and aquaculture is concerned, healthy coastal resources are also a guarantee of better adaptation to climate change.

The main thread of the fisheries dep’rtment's workshops, posters, videos, dissections, quizzes and other games were presented to the students by three of the dep’rtment's agents who were keen to convey and explain to the students how we can better manage our coastal resources to make them more resilient to climate change, but also to better understand the biology of the species and the interactions within the ecosystems, to assess the resource and to put in place effective management measures that are accepted b“ all.

"We are pleasantly surprised, since the beginning of the campaign 'the sea, our source of life’, the messages have passed among the youngest, the broadcasting of the clips of the Pacific Community on TV had a real impact. We are counting on them to convince their parents!" Baptiste Jaugeon, facilitator on the PROTEGE project, Fisheries Department - DSA.

"The fish dissection workshop is fascinating to students, we teach them to identify the species, locate the main organs and determine the sex and stage of maturity of the individual.”

A big congratulations to the agents of the fisheries service and especially to the students, captivated and attentive, who will know how to carry the messages of sustainability of fishing to current and future generations.
