Production of a sampling report summarizing all the actions carried out from 2020 to 2022 at the Port-Moselle market

The Coastal Fisheries Observatory of New Caledonia (OPC NC), supported by the services of the Directorate of Sustainable Development of the Southern Province, and assisted by the Pacific Community (CPS) through the Coastal Fisheries Program of the Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Marine Ecosystems (FAME) Division, conducted routine biological monitoring at the Port-Moselle market in Noumea from August 2020 to August 2022.

This initiative works with the recommendations outlined in the feasibility study for the establishment of a coastal fisheries observatory in the Southern Province (Guillemot, 2017) and builds upon the methodological proposals of Génevé (2019), which designates the Noumea market as "the best site for sustaining biological sampling and informing the temporal evolution of data related to fishery resources."

Indeed, Marty et al. (2005) estimate that over 70% of lagoon fish volumes from coastal professional fishing pass through this market.

This document presents the initial results:

  • A regular monitoring of the sizes and weights of significant fish species at the Port-Moselle market, and
  • A study on the sizes of sexual maturity and the annual variation of fertility for a limited number of species.

It offers an initial analysis of the obtained results and the feasibility, limitations, and prospects of such monitoring.

In total, 36 sampling sessions were conducted, corresponding to 83 stalls sampled and 132 different landings. Each sampling session involves collecting data on approximately 340 fish and obtaining individual size and weight measurements: 468 hours of sampling were cumulated, representing half a day of effective sampling, planning, and 1.5 hours of data entry per session.

This corresponds to 0.2 full-time equivalent (FTE) annually; 12,190 fish and 175 crustaceans were measured, distributed among 8 main families.
