The “PACific ocean PATHways” project, for a sustainable development of the Pacific ocean

A multidisciplinary consortium on the Ocean is yet to take off in New-Caledonia and Fidji to strengthen a common vision and sustainable and efficient actions.

Funded by the Belmont Forum, PACPATH aims at gathering scientific experts to further the Ocean’s knowledge, policy efficiency and the identification of appropriate indicators in order to find a new and sustainable way of exploiting the Ocean’s resources.

The initial PACPATH’s consortium was composed of experts from 14 organizations, including the French national Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), the University of South Pacific (USP) based in Fidji, the University of New Caledonia (UNC), several German and American universities, the Pacific Community (SPC), Mercator Ocean International and the Coastal Observatory of the Government of New Caledonia. This consortium made up of renowned academical leaders, includes two Lead Authors of the IPCC Special Report on oceans.

Some workshops will gather the stakeholders to define which research, data and indicators can support and ensure ocean’s sustainability. Firstly, the project will rely on pilot studies in Fiji and New-Caledonia, and then will be co-constructed with institutional and academical actors, local communities, the local and traditional knowledge holder, and the other stakeholders. The nature and geographical scope of these studies will be defined with the New-Caledonian and Fijian institutions. From these studies will stem a framework and a methodology, which will be helpful for other insular countries, namely with the Pacific Community Centre for Ocean Science (PCCOS), whose purpose is to provide integrated scientific services for ocean’s management and governance, and ocean observations.
