Annual report 2022 of the Coastal Fisheries Observatory of Wallis and Futuna

For sustainable management of marine resources, consult the new annual report 2022 of the Coastal Fisheries Observatory of Wallis and Futuna, prepared by the Fisheries Department (DSA)

Editorial from the annual report by Ului’monua, Customary Minister of the Primary Sector in Wallis (livestock, agriculture, and fishing) since 2017:

"Fishing practices in Wallis have evolved since my childhood. Back then, there were always fishermen in canoes in the lagoon, using small nets to catch fish for eating and sharing with family and villagers.

Today, fishing has become a profession, and fish are sold in stores. This has led to advancements in fishing techniques, such as the introduction of motorized boats and more efficient fishing equipment. All these developments justify the need for better monitoring of coastal fishing in Wallis.

The Coastal Fisheries Observatory is an excellent tool for collecting and disseminating information about coastal fishing. It provides a clearer picture of fishing activities in Wallis and enables better monitoring of fishermen.

The Coastal Fisheries Observatory clearly plays a crucial role in our territory. Before its establishment, it was difficult to gather data on fishing (number of fishermen, quantities caught). Now, we have a better understanding of fishing in Wallis and the state of our marine resources. It is essential to maintain the momentum initiated with the PROTEGE program within the Fisheries Department, for the benefit of our people and future generations.
