Strengthening the governance of organic agriculture in the Pacific of and the Pacific Organic Agriculture Standard (NOAB) management

As part of PROTEGE's support to the structuring of organic agriculture through POETCom in the region, two regional workshops are organized this week.

These workshops complement the interviews conducted over 6 countries and territories in the region by consultants from the Institute for Research and Application of Development Methods (IRAM).

The objective is to formulate scenarios for the development of the POETCom, considering the expectations and needs of farmers, governments, communities that supervise and support organic agriculture, and all stakeholders in this sector.

40 people from a dozen countries and territories in the region attended the first workshop on April 5. Constructive discussion on the Pacific Organic Guarantee System (POGS) which manages the NOAB and the accreditation of participatory guaranteed systems (GSP) took place:

  • unit harmonization of GSPs in the region,
  • role and place of governmental organizations
  • NOAB ownership and the brand,
  • NOAB economic sustainability.

On April 7 the second workshop discussion will be held online. It will focus on POETCom governance, including:

  • POETCom key functions: type of membership, level of representativeness needed, type of governance related,
  • membership issue for all users of organic standards and stakeholders including government agencies
  • POETCom membership rights and voting arrangements
  • focal points role.
