Resilience - Episode "In the name of Earth" on Wallis and Futuna

Tonight, after the news on WF la 1ère, watch the episode of the magazine Resilience which will focus on agricultural practices and actions taken within Oceanian communities to make them more climate resilient.

In Fakarava, French Polynesia, Tehei is a farmer and member of the PROTEGE network of agroecological demonstration farms and cultivates a vegetable plot. As on most coral islands, water resources are scarce and soils are nutrient poor. The PROTEGE project accompanies him to optimize the fertility of his land and his water consumption. Through agroforestry and hydrological studies, Tehei adapts his practices to produce fruits and vegetables without impacting the ecosystem.

In Wallis, Sosefo and Malia Falakika, a couple of farmers, also members of the PROTEGE network of agroecology demonstration farms, operate a food crop plot. Yams, taros, papayas, pandanus... the couple cultivates the traditional species of the island used for meals but also for custom and crafts.

Nevertheless, in Wallis and Futuna, agriculture does not attract the younger generation. The island is thus at risk of seeing ancestral agricultural practices and endemic varieties disappear. A real danger for agrobiodiversity, food security and adaptation to climate change. The Agronomic and New Caledonian Institute (IAC) will present its very interesting action in Wallis in this context.

In New Caledonia, Yohanna, from the Chamber of Agriculture and Fisheries (CAP NC) explains how to support farmers to adapt to climate hazards.
