Researching alternatives to chemical herbicides in the pineapple production in French Polynesia

Pineapple is the main fruit production in French Polynesia. 3400 tons were marketed in 2019 and 140 ha of pineapples are planted on Moorea.

Weed control is one of the main technical constraints causing the repeated use of chemical herbicides which can be harmful to the environment.

Through the PROTEGE project and in partnership with the French Polynesia Agriculture Department, farmers are participating in the search for alternatives to chemical herbicides in order to limit the risks of pollution of the lagoon and to enable organic certification of their production.

This video was made with the farmers and agricultural technicians of the Agriculture Department of Moorea.
