REGISTER FOR : VIRTUAL WORKSHOP ON COCONUT CONSERVATION IN SITU

A virtual and physical workshop for Pacific region farmers & agricultural officers
24/25th April - 2023

Coconut selection and breeding by farmers is extremely effective over the long term. It has led to a magnificent range of coconut varieties and a greatly diversified species.

However, farmers have worked empirically, with little control over the reproduction of coconut trees. Recent studies show that this on-farm selection generally has an efficiency of less than 10% per generation (R. Bourdeix pers. Comm).

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

A better understanding of coconut floral biology and of the phenotypic markers in both the nursery and mature palms can increase the efficiency of this on-farm selection. This workshop will allow farmers to appropriate this knowledge and these techniques to increase the efficiency of their selection.

In particular, farmers need simple means of crossing coconut palms. Even though these inexpensive techniques are only 50-80% effective, they offer a major improvement over the previous situation where the effectiveness was only 10%.

The two main objectives of the workshops are to:

1. Equip farmers and extensionists with the necessary information and tools to effectively conserve coconuts and develop coconut varieties in situ for improved livelihoods

2. Strengthen data management on coconut varieties in Pacific Island countries
