Agroecology demonstration farms’ follow up in the Marquesas (French Polynesia)

Visit of two demonstration farms in agroecology, in the Marquesas.

As part of the meetings of PROTEGE’s network of agroecology demonstration farms, two agents of the French Polynesia Agriculture Departmentand the Pacific Community travelled to the Marquesas, within the two farms of Anna Loridan on one hand (Hiva Oa) and the couple Tuhuna Sulpice / Leila Liberge on the other hand (Ua Huka).

These visits made it possible to deliver equipment, assist the farmers for their set up and agree with them on a follow-up protocol. These devices (rain gauge and TDR probes to measure soil moisture) are mainly aimed at helping farmers optimize their water management.

A hundred waterboxes have also been delivered to facilitate the growth of young plants in a context of significant water stress. These waterboxes will be tested in both farms but also on the grounds of the future school of Ua Huka, on which six devices have been installed in partnership with the municipality and the students of the Young Adolescents Center (CJA) of the island.

These visits were also an opportunity to give farmers the results of their soil analysis and to advise them in terms of fertilization, choice of intercopping plants to associate or agricultural techniques to be preferred.
