Tests conducted by theServices of Agriculture of French Polynesia on the island of Moorea.

Organic alternatives to pineapple herbicides

Officers from the Agriculture Services (DAG) are conducting tests with volunteer farmers to identify possible and effective alternatives to the use of herbicides in pineapple crops.

Visits to the farms as well as discussions with the DAG agents, the DAG's PROTEGE facilitator and the PROTEGE coordinator from French Polynesia have shown that the herbicides currently being tested for use in organic agriculture have not yet brought complete satisfaction. However, the tests must continue in order to test the effectiveness of an application at a less advanced stage of grassing.

In addition, tests of mulching solutions and the use of service plants are underway and the best combinations are being sought: crushed coconut, vetiver, woven hemp cloth, bamboo mulch, falcata mulch and algae.
