Supporting the sustainable management of pearl farming in Mangareva (Gambiers)

As part of the PROTEGE project, a delegation including two agents from the Marine Resources Directorate of French Polynesia and two agents from the Pacific Community, travelled to Mangareva from the 25th to the 29thof May, to contribute to the sustainable management of the pearl sector.

High place of pearl production in French Polynesia, the Mangareva lagoon is one of the pearl lagoons monitored by RESOLAG, the marine observation network. This monitoring is carried out through the regular collection of parameters such as temperature, salinity, fluorescence, turbidity, or dissolved oxygen.

As such, a multi-parametric probe was re-installed, after repair, at a voluntary pearl grower. DRM agents can thus once again continue to collect the data necessary to study the variations of the lagoon and help the sector in the sustainable management of the resource.

In addition, a public meeting and several farm visits made it possible to raise awareness and discuss the issue of pearl waste management. To this end, a film for pearl growers is being made as part of PROTEGE.
