Detection and monitoring of deer abundance by drone

First night shots obtained by a drone equipped with a thermal sensor

As part of the PROTEGE project, CEN has contracted with the company Ecotone, thanks to co-funding from the Rural Agency, to allow the detection and monitoring of the abundance of deer by drone.

The objective is to propose and test an aerial index of abundance, relevant and simple to set up, which will allow to monitor variations in deer abundance and evaluate the benefits of regulatory actions. The principle is to use drones to detect, locate and assess the abundance of deer, which is practical, fast and projected on hard-to-reach areas, replicable and inexpensive in time and human resources.

The action will be developed in sectors made up of savannahs far from inhabited areas difficult to access, included or peripheral to dense forest blocks in one of the 3 priority areas of the project (Néaoua, Massif du Panié and Thio).

The first shots made on a private property are very promising!
