Discussion and consultation in Lifou and Maré – NC

In New Caledonia, the Wilderness Conservation Agency (CEN) is the leader of the PROTEGE project Invasive Species theme.

The management of invasive ungulates, mainly the rusa deer, the feral pig and the feral goat is at the heart of the matter. In the Loyalty Islands (Lifou and Maré), wild pigs and feral goats are the main targets.

The main objective of these meetings is to present the project, its regional dimension, its goals, the proposed activities, the stakeholders and the benefits-beneficiaries in Lifou and Maré. The approval sought from the customary authorities then makes it possible to inform and work with the tribes from different districts in a participatory way (information, training in the laying of snares and cage traps, provision of 20 cage traps (in Lifou) and distribution of collars, safety training for hunting, participatory regulation and protection of natural spaces...).

This action is supported by additional funding from the Rural Agency and provincial communities.

Schedule:

A project presentation meeting was held with the customary councils of the Drehu and Nengone area. 6 information meetings were also held in 6 districts in Lifou between 17/02/2021 and 05/03/2021, and 4 in Maré between 25/02/2021 and 23/04/2021.

A meeting was held today in Wé (Lifou) and the last one will be held tomorrow, April 30, 2021.
