Activity report 2021 of the Coastal Fisheries Observatory of New Caledonia

In New Caledonia, as in most of the Pacific Islands, the supply and availability of seafood is an essential component of food systems. It is our collective responsibility to have practices and levels of exploitation that ensure their sustainability and resilience.

In New Caledonia, until recently, there was a lack of a tool for centralizing and analyzing data on the coastal fisheries sector capable of providing accurate and objective information.

To overcome this lack, the New Caledonian Coastal Fisheries Observatory (OPC) was born in early 2020 from the shared will of local authorities, thanks to the PROTEGE program (Regional Oceanic Project of Territories for the Sustainable Management of Ecosystems) funded by the European Union through the 11th EDF (European Development Fund).

In two years, the young Observatory, supported by ADECAL Technopole, has succeeded in bringing together all the players in the sector to discuss economic, ecological and coordination issues on a New Caledonian scale. Both at the discussion table and in the field, it has established bonds of trust and cooperation with the fishermen, who are gradually taking ownership of this new tool. However, even though the Assises de la pêche will set a new ambition for the sector at the end of 2022, the PROTEGE program will come to an end in 2023. This is why one of the major challenges today is to collectively find ways to perpetuate this Observatory.
