Monitoring the quality of the marine environment: cooperation between the Pacific OCTs
The first guide for monitoring the quality of the marine environment under the influence ofexposed to aquaculture and pearl farming in French Polynesia has just been presented to stakeholders from New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna.
The PROTEGE project has published this guide that sets out the implementation of an observation network to detect any degradation of the lagoon environment.
The guide draws up an inventory of the pressures and threats associated with these farming activities, proposes a series of physicochemical and biological parameters and, based on concrete examples, provides advice on how to implement this monitoring.
Introduced in Tahiti in February 2022, it was presented on 8 July to around twenty participants from various backgrounds, from New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna: resource and marine environment managers, development agencies, CNRT, scientists, the French Office for Biodiversity, and consultancy firms.
Although the contexts are different in these three Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), the sustainability of these economic activities without compromising the preservation of the environment is a common issue,which the guide addresses through a technical and scientific approach validated by numerous experts.
