Customary Marine Protected Area (CMPA) in Wallis
In line with the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Services Department’s actions via PROTEGE, the dedicated team at the Fisheries Service carried out two awareness-raising actions for schoolchildren.
The Faiva Tautai association, made up of commercial fishers from Wallis, has set up a CMPA project in the northeast lagoon. This zone was marked out in 2023 and will soon be the subject of "baseline" scientific monitoring.
This new mode of protection for the Territory provides an opportunity to raise awareness among the young people of the Fenua about preservation of their marine environment.
On 06/09 Faiva Tautai held an initial morning-long session to introduce this zone to a Year-6 class from Mataotama College. This initiative was supported by the Fisheries Service of the W&F Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Services Department, the Les enfants du lagon (children of the lagoon) association and Wallis Lagon Sécurité.
The Fisheries Service would like to acknowledge the commercial fishers (Taniela Sau, Efelemo Fuaga, Tamiano Lie and Tuitoafa Mikaele Neti) who donated their time to transport and accompany the children to introduce them to their profession and explain their commitment to this CMPA project.
These actions have been carried out in line with the work undertaken as part of the PROTEGE project (marine area and awareness-raising tools).
